For the most part, when buying an HD TV antenna, we recommend outdoor antennas because they have the best opportunity to provide you with a high quality TV signal. Of course, that’s not always possible and for the average user isn’t desirable. Many neighborhoods have rules that prevent the display of an HD TV antenna on the outside of your home so it may not be possible to find a hidden location that provides a decent signal. On the other hand, installing an outdoor TV antenna and running the necessary cable to one or more TVs isn’t for everyone.
So, an HD TV antenna that you can install either outside or inside your home, that still delivers decent reception, is very desirable.
What is an HD TV Antenna?
There is nothing special about an HD TV antenna. It is not designed differently to receive HDTV signals. That’s because HDTV is broadcast on the same UHF and VHF channel frequencies as other TV signals. VHF/UHF antennas currently in use will receive HDTV signals just fine. With the advent of the “cut-the-cable” movement along with new HDTV over-the-air channels, there has been a lot of hype about HD TV antennas and to sell antennas. You shouldn’t pay more for a digital antenna because it says it receives HDTV.

Why aren’t all TV antennas amplified?
A TV signal arrives at the HD antenna as a combination of the TV signal and noise. An amplifier doesn’t remove noise from the signal. It just amplifies both the signal and the noise. The purpose of an amplifier is to provide a stronger signal to your TV’s receiver. This is usually necessary for long cable runs from the antenna to the TV, in the case where you place the antenna inside your home where the signal must travel through the structure, or if you’re planning to supply signal to multiple TVs. Again, both the signal and the noise will be amplified. If you are placing an HD TV antenna outside and the cable run is not long, no amplifier is usually necessary.
Where should I place my antenna?
If you’re placing the antenna inside your home, then the best location is on the second floor or attic if you have one. In general, place it high up on a wall close to the ceiling on the side of the house closer to the direction from which most of your TV channels originate.
How do I find out the directions to my TV broadcast antennas?
There are websites that provide maps of your local TV stations in relation to your home. Go to CopRadar.com, TVFool.com, or AntennasDirect.com to see a map and in some cases antenna type recommendations.
We searched TV forums, retail sites, consumer sites, social media, manufacturer sites, and customer review sites to find the most popular and highly rated amplified indoor/outdoor HDTV antenna.
